Located in the shadow of the Citadel Laferrière, with spectacular views, enclosed in huge mountains, the town of Dondon is the ideal place for eco -tourism. The origin of the town of Dondon dates back to September 11, 1698 when this portion of land was given to filibuster surgeon André Minguet . Its mountains with sloping rocks and disorder of his masses are tangible manifestations of major Earth changes. Moreau de Saint-Mery was right to say, " there is perhaps no place in the colony a more picturesque than this parish site."

The village is situated at an altitude of about 425 m above sea level and is surrounded on all sides by mountains, some of which are part of the Swiss Cup in Bishop where stands the Citadelle Laferrière. The highest point of the municipality is located in Haut-du-Trou 1028 meters. In general, air Dondon is cool, temperate and healthy.

Dondon is located in the department of Nord, about 30 km from the city of Cap- Haitien, and 290 km from Port -au- Prince (106 km as the crow flies). Adjacent to the following municipalities: the Grande Rivière du Nord to the east, Saint- Raphaël (East and South), Saint -Michel de l'Attalaye (South and West), Marmalade (West), La Plaine du Nord and Milot (North), Dondon was a link between the north and the Artibonite and has played a leading role in the war of independence. Dondon birthplace Vincent Oge, who was one of the first martyrs of freedom and Gabart Levaillant, one of the heroes of the war of independence.

History tends to associate Dondon these two heroes and Cave of Minguet which in pre-Columbian times was a place of pilgrimage for the people of the island. Some of the stories of historical significance that were overlooked were:

1 - The Jesuit Persons who provided Charlevois the main materials of St Domingo history, died in Dondon

2 - Father of the Hague after having been accused as a promoter and director of the slave insurrection in the North, was drowned by order of Rochambeau in the harbor of Cape Town, was pastor at Dondon in 1792

3 - In 1791, Jean -Francois and Biassou, leaders of rebellious slaves s' possession of Dondon killed a hundred whites.

4 - In 1794, Toussaint Louverture attacked Dondon it took the Spaniards in favor of French . This feat of arms contributed to increase its influence.

5 - Roume was prisoner in Dondon

6 - With the arrival of the shipment Leclerc, General Christopher Hardy assaulted Dondon and Christophe was forced to retire in Marmelade leaving a portion of his troops to take Hardy failure.

7 - In 1802, The people from Dondon, after chasing Christophe as commander, accusing him of misdeeds under the command of French, received the visit of Dessalines to force them to accept Christophe. He gave them a concession by sending Christophe Milot.

It is this history and the geography related to the beauty of its landscape and the hospitality of his son and daughters, who have inspired, the Organization for the Integral Development of Dondon ( ODID ) vision to work towards a future radiating to the Dondon worthy of its history and its natural resources. The enhancement of Dondon is a symbol of success for the tourism project in the far north and the country in general.
